Chernivtsi
This gem of western Ukraine is home to the Chernivtsi University, a UNESCO-protected building surrounded by charming Vienna-style cafes. In fact, Chernivtsi is often called “Little Vienna” for its Austro-Hungarian architectural heritage. It has its own Chernivtsi Museum of Art for exploring Art Nouveau architecture and appreciating multiculturalism.
Kharkiv
Now the country’s second city, Kharviv used to be Ukraine’s capital. To visit Kharkiv is to encounter museums and marvel at the constructivist architecture of the Derzhprom building in Freedom Square, one of the largest squares in all of Europe finished in 1928. The city is also home to the Mirror Stream, another UNESCO-protected site.
Kiev
Of course, a visit to Ukraine won’t be complete without witnessing the golden domes and eclectic architecture of the country’s capital. The city is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves) and St. Sophia Cathedral. Visitors should likewise not miss the Andriyivskyy Descent, a historic street paved with cobblestones.
